CHAPTER 6

Stefanie and James grabbed their clothes on the way back, but didn’t change to human until they were at her apartment. No one noticed a pair of wolves in the city with everything else going on. Even then, Stefanie was tempted to stay a wolf because she’d heal faster. Yet it was best to clean her wounds the human way.

James followed her lead and transformed, immediately turning to dress himself. She didn’t look away, but eyed his lean body as she slipped on her panties and T-shirt. He was bruised and scratched with one minor bite mark. His movements were a bit awkward, but it was probably due to feeling her eyes on him more than any other injuries. Her gaze dragged up his long legs to his cute ass as he pulled on his pants.

He kept his back to her until she went to the kitchen to fetch a clean dish towel and a bottle of hydrogen peroxide. Stefanie didn’t have much in the way of first aid. Never needed it.

“Are you all right?” His hazel eyes echoed his concerned expression.

“I’ll heal.” Stefanie sat on a chair and propped her foot up on the paint dotted coffee table. Her calf wasn’t bleeding any more, but the wound was an ugly thing. Might leave a scar. Not that it bothered her, she wasn’t vain, but it was a reminder of how close she came to being captured or, if Colin and June would’ve preferred, killed. They’d made it clear on several occasions they never wanted her as Wyatt’s mate, but they wouldn’t go against him if he was there.

When Wyatt wasn’t around, they did what they wanted to do.

Unscrewing the cap on the bottle, she poured some peroxide onto the towel and pressed it to her calf. Stefanie hissed and kicked her other heel against the floor a few times as if it could distract her from the dreadful sting. The gash fizzed as it rid itself of any bacteria or other nasties. She almost dropped the bottle, spilling a little of the liquid.

James knelt beside her and took the container from her hand. “Let me. Sit.”

She didn’t protest. Handing over the towel too, she reclined and gripped the arms of the chair.

He had a gentle touch. When she sucked in another breath and tensed, he paused but kept at it. Stefanie couldn’t remember the last time someone had done this for her. Maybe her mother when she was a little girl, but Stefanie always had to prove she was tough. She did everything for herself from a young age. There was something about this she missed, and it stirred up emotions she hadn’t felt in a long time.

James did a thorough job without saying a word. He checked all her other bites and cuts too. Applying a dab of peroxide to the deeper ones.

“Did I get them all?” He avoided her gaze as he asked. His cheeks were slightly pink.

“You did.” Any other time, she might’ve teased him, but it was sweet he didn’t look under her shirt himself to check.
